What to Expect at a Pre-Wedding Shoot in Coventry

A pre-wedding shoot (sometimes called an engagement shoot) is a relaxed photo session for the two of you before the big day. It’s a chance to get beautiful photos for your save-the-dates, invitations or wedding website, and just as importantly, to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding itself.
If you’re planning one in Coventry, here’s exactly what to expect.
How long does a pre-wedding shoot take?
Most sessions last between one and two hours. That’s enough time for one or two locations and up to two outfits without anyone getting tired. A typical session looks like this:
- A few minutes to say hello, settle in and talk through the plan.
- Around 45 minutes at the first location.
- A short break to change outfits if you’re doing two looks.
- Another 30 to 45 minutes at a second spot, finishing with a few last shots.
The best time of day
Golden hour, the hour or so before sunset, gives the softest, warmest light and the most flattering photos. In summer that can be quite late in the evening, and in winter it can be mid-afternoon, so we’ll plan the start time around the season.
Great places for a pre-wedding shoot in and around Coventry
- Coventry Cathedral and the old cathedral ruins: one of the most striking backdrops in the country, mixing history and modern architecture. Professional photography needs advance approval from the cathedral, and there may be a charge.
- War Memorial Park: open lawns, tree-lined paths and beautiful colour in autumn. A relaxed, natural setting.
- Spon Street: timber-framed medieval buildings give a romantic, old-English feel right in the city centre.
- Coombe Abbey Country Park: formal gardens, a lake and parkland just outside the city. Professional shoots need booking in advance with the park and there’s a fee.
- Kenilworth Castle: dramatic sandstone ruins about 20 minutes away. As an English Heritage site, professional shoots need arranging with them first.
- Warwick Castle: a fairytale option, but shoots are agreed case by case with the castle, so it needs planning well ahead.
I’ll help you pick somewhere that suits you as a couple and sort out any permissions before the day.
What to wear
- Bring two outfits if you’d like variety: maybe one dressed-up look and one more casual.
- Coordinate rather than match. Colours that sit well together look better than identical outfits.
- Traditional outfits look incredible. Matching Ankara prints, aso oke, agbada, iro and buba with gele all photograph beautifully, especially against greenery or stone. If you’re wearing a gele, allow extra time to get it tied before we start.
- Avoid big logos and very busy patterns unless they’re part of your style. Bold, solid colours and rich prints work best.
- Comfortable shoes for walking, then swap into the nice ones for the photos.
What to bring
- Any outfit changes, plus a bag to carry them.
- A small mirror, a comb, and lip balm or lipstick for touch-ups.
- Any props that mean something to you: a ring box, flowers, a sign with your date.
- Water, and an umbrella just in case. It is Coventry after all.
Don’t worry about posing
Most couples tell me they feel awkward in front of a camera. That’s completely normal. I’ll guide you through every pose and keep things light, and after the first ten minutes most couples forget the camera is there. The best photos usually come from the in-between moments: laughing, talking, walking together.
When do you get your photos?
You’ll receive your professionally edited gallery within 7 to 10 days, ready to download and share, and in plenty of time for your save-the-dates.
